Amid the ongoing migrant crisis in New York, the state has deployed its National Guard – not to enforce border security, but to help illegal aliens with their paperwork.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the deployment, adding that 150 guardsmen will help Venezuelan border crossers apply for federal employment authorization. She explained that the additional manpower will aid illegal immigrants in attaining legal work status and exiting taxpayer-funded shelters.
“It is critical that we help secure work authorization for asylum seekers and migrants in New York [State],” Hochul argued. “We need to ensure individuals can navigate the paperwork necessary to get them established here so they can work and start making their American Dream a reality.”
According to Just The News, the 150 guardsmen to be deployed will supplement the roughly 2,000 guard members already assigned to the migrant crisis. Guardsmen had been deployed to 51 hotels and two emergency centers in New York City (NYC) as of writing.
Back in August, Hochul directed the New York Department of Labor to connect employers with illegal aliens with work permits. She said at the time that more than 70 state personnel have been assigned to help with processing of work authorizations. The Empire State has provided $50 million to help with “case management” for these illegal aliens that should not have been in the country in the first place.
The governor’s action follows President Joe Biden’s decision a week prior to extend the federal government’s temporary protection status (TPS) to about 475,000 Venezuelans who entered the country illegally. The illegal aliens reportedly arrived before July 31, and the TPS extension permitted them to work in the U.S. legally.
Hochul herself personally lobbied Biden to extend the TPS designation to the Venezuelan contingent, arguing that it would help relieve pressure on the Empire State’s already beleaguered shelter system. But New York Republicans begged to differ. They have long argued that TPS and “sanctuary” policies are encouraging illegal aliens to travel to the Empire State.
The Big Apple has seen more than 110,000 illegal aliens arrive, concurrent with a surge of border crossers along the southern border over the past year. The self-proclaimed “sanctuary city” is providing housing, food and other necessities for more than 60,000 migrants. But this isn’t enough, forcing NYC to open more than 200 shelters and tighten rules on its emergency housing program.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams has issued a grim warning that the Big Apple’s migrant crisis will eventually destroy the city. He also exhorted Washington, D.C. to help address the crisis by providing more funding or resources. According to Adams, caring for these illegal immigrants will cost taxpayers $12 billion in the next two years.
“Let me tell you something, New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this,” he said. “This issue will destroy New York City.” (Related: NYC Mayor Eric Adams admits mass illegal immigration is inherently destructive for the Big Apple.)
According to the former police officer-turned-city mayor, a “broken” nationwide immigration system and Republican states busing illegals from their territories also contribute to the problem. But he also took aim at the federal government, saying: “We’re getting no support on this national crisis.”
